BREAKING FREE FROM BESETTING SIN

Question:

What is your counsel to a believer who is sincerely trying to live right and break free from a particular sin, but keeps falling into the same sin? M. F.  Warri

Pst. Gavin’s response:

This is the reality of many believers. They are not happy about a particular sin. And they are sincerely trying to come out from it, but they keep falling into it.

The person does not need deliverance as some may suppose. They don’t need a devil to be cast out of their life before they can overcome such sin.

Let me give five simple but profound solutions to this problem:

1. Engage your willpower. Be determined to stop the sin.

You must be willing and determined to stop the sin. This decision has to come from within you. Nobody can stop you from doing what you still find pleasure in.

So, the first step to breaking free from any besetting sin is to engage your willpower and be determined to stop it. This is your first step out of any besetting sin.

2. Give your life to Christ and be filled with God's Spirit.

No human can quit sin by his or her own power. But when you sincerely submit your life to the Lordship of Christ and get filled with God's Spirit, then will you be able to do what you naturally could not do by your own human strength.

“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”

Zachariah 4:6

3. Kill the fuel.

Disconnect from whatever or whoever is making you to keep committing that sin.

“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

1Corinthains 15:33

Take for example, if a person wants to break completely free from the sin of sexual immorality. He or she must disconnect from friends, companies and relationships that lure him into that sin. He must also stop reading, watching and listening to sexually explicit books, movies and music. This must be done INTENTIONALLY.

4. Get along with believers

Get along with godly people who you can learn the scripture from and also learn from their lifestyle.

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

Proverbs 27:17

Influence is powerful. When you get yourself among believers who influence you directly or indirectly with their lifestyle, you will find it easy to change your own lifestyle for the better.

5. Renew your mind by the word

Beside the many advantages of reading the Bible, one of the major benefits is in the renewing of the mind.

Collecting and studying scriptures that addresses the challenge you are going through, will help a great deal.

For example, a young man who is battling with the spirit of lust and immorality can get all the scriptures that speak on and against immorality. Studying passages like Proverbs 5, 6 and chapter 7 will help a great deal in this regard.
